Three Floyds ‘Backmasking’ Craft Beer Review

Brewed by Three Floyds Brewing Co. & Brewpub

$12.99/bomber

Style: Oatmeal Stout

5.90% ABV

Serve at 50-55°

Availability: Spring

Enjoyed from a snifter

Notes/Commercial Description:

Noun- A recording technique in which a sound or message is recorded backward on to a track that is meant to be played forward.

A: Pours a dark. earthy brown, with light purple/ruby color rounding out the glass. Pours one finger of mocha-colored head that vanishes like a wisp. Nice sticky lacing.

S: Oats, heavily roasted malts, cocoa, chocolate milk, brown sugar and lots of roasted grains as it warms up.

T: Dominating chocolate and roasted malt on the front end, subtle coffee notes, very sweet. More like their Moloko milk stout than a true oatmeal stout. Toffee, burnt grainy bread, chicory, and a tart finish.

M: Medium to heavy mouthfeel. Very creamy.

O: Three Floyds have such a reputation for producing beers on the extreme side of things that many fans will blow this off. While I’ve had plenty of superior oatmeal stouts, this is a welcome addition. My gripes are the limited availability and weak ass ABV. Killer label as usual. It will take more than this to get upset with the great folks at 3 Floyds.
