Valium, please. Mastodon and Opeth released album titles in the last week; let’s waste no time and get to it. Opeth’s anticipated 11th album is titled “Pale Communion” and it hits on June 17, a mere week before my birthday, thank you. Largely written and produced by Opeth leader, Mikael Åkerfeldt, the 8 track album might disappoint some hardcore fans. Åkerfeldt told noisey.vice the following.
“I wanted to do something more melodic with this album…there’s stronger vocal melodies and more melodies overall…I was pretty consistent with that frame of mind throughout the writing process.”
To me, this might be an sign that fans are in for more of Heritage‘s clean vocals, which is fine by me. The new album is available for pre-order on May 6, but we should hear the single “Cusp of Eternity” soon.
“Pale Communion” track list:
1. Eternal Rains Will Come
2. Cusp of Eternity
3. Moon Above, Sun Below
4. Elysian Woes
7. Voice of Treason
8. Faith in Others
Neck in neck with my growing Opeth excitement, Mastodon dropped a name announcement as well. Their 6th album, “Once More Round the Sun“, reportedly follows Mastodon’s complex prog-metal vibe. Bassist, Troy Saunders commented about the album at Rolling Stone.
“It’s gonna be massive and insane, lots of epic greatness. There will be lots of huge riffs and new directions. It’s real weird, real math-y, real straightforward. It’s up, down and all around. It’s a culmination of everything for the band. The snowball keeps rolling and collecting snow.”
Song titles include Once More Round the Sun, Ember City, and the image-invoking Diamonds in the Witch House.
