Spoilers if you haven’t seen last night’s episode.
Last night was an amazing episode. Rick and Carl, along with Michonne were featured predominately, giving us often times uncomfortable glimpses into the lives of these beaten down characters. Carl was left to escort Rick to rest after his one-on-one brawl with Phillip. Carl is clearly growing and maturing as a man and as a survivor. Did his father deserve the hurtful words and was it better for everyone that Rick slept through the melt-down? In the end, Carl endured some trauma that showed his father in a different, much-needed light. In similar ways, Michonne was suffering the terror of being alone again, forced to wander that walker-infested woods with two new undead camouflage partners. If anything took me by surprise, it was seeing Michonne in her former life before the outbreak. It was in the form of a dream, but it was bizarre to see her in a dress or undertaking mundane tasks. Crazy episode. Next week is sure to feature more of the group struggling to find their friends and identities.
Following the devastating events of the mid-season finale, Rick and the group are still reeling from the loss of their home, family, and friends. With the destruction of the prison, we see the group of survivors broken apart and sent on divergent paths, unsure of everyone else’s fate. What was a challenging life behind fences and walls grows that much more perilous and precious as they are exposed to new dangers, new enemies, and heartbreaking choices. They will have their faith thoroughly tested — a faith that breaks some of them and redeems others.
