Remembering “Dimebag” Darrell Abbott
Metal heads lost a hero on this day nine years ago. A troubled “fan” shot and killed Darrell Abbott as his band, Damage Plan, performed in Columbus, Ohio. Initial theories surrounding the reasons behind the death were quickly tossed out, and the shooter’s diagnosed schizophrenia was labeled as the cause. Metal has lost a lot of its icons over the years, but was the most senseless in my opinion.
I had the honor of meeting Dimebag backstage in Springfield, Illinois back in 1994. Darrell was very kind guy, even taking the time to talk with me about metal guitar skills, offering new ways to practice scales and modes. His enthusiasm for metal was unmatched; much like his skill. Gone, but never forgotten, we honor your life and music today, Dimebag.
