‘Smuttynose Pumpkin Ale’ Craft Beer Review

Brewed by Smuttynose Brewing Company

Style: Pumpkin Ale

5.84% ABV

Serve at 40-45°

Availability: Fall

Smuttynose Pumpkin Ale is our homage to the craft and heritage of America’s brewers. Recipes calling for the use of pumpkins in beer date back to early colonial times, when brewers sought to extend their supply of costly imported malt with locally grown ingredients, such as squash and “pompions.”

In that spirit, we brew our ale with the addition of pumpkin to the mash, along with traditional spices to create a delicious American original.

Enjoyed from a pint glass

A: Pours a very nice pumpkin-orange with a slight haze and two fingers of creamy head. It dissipates a few sips in, but leaves ring after ring of lacing behind.

S: “He who controls the spice controls the universe.” Nutmeg, cinnamon, allspice, cloves, and spiced pumpkin control the nose. I get a slight aroma of sweet malts beneath, but the spices are clearly calling the shots.

T: A smack of hops hits the tongue before the previously mentioned spices, even adding a subtle vanilla note to balance the spices. The pumpkin puree is obvious, adding a slightly sour finish, one that works well with the sweetness.

M: Medium bodied, very spicy and crisp. Dry and a little sweet in the finish.

O: Fall beers are hitting the shelves before Halloween decorations and I’m 100% cool with that, Pumpkin beers are many, but the quality brews are less in number. Smuttynose was just added to our market this year, and this pumpkin ale is a welcome addition to the season. Cheers,

  1. With all the upcoming pumpkin beers to try, I think you are right about spices ruling the world. This looks delicious! Smuttynose is sold in my neighborhood, so I will have to try some this weekend.

    • I picked up more of the Schlafly Pumpkin Ale this morning. We don’t have Dogfish Head’s Punkin or Southern Tier’s Pumking, which is my hands down favorite of all the pumpkins beers. Cheers!

  2. Cheers! Yes!! Beer advocate score of 94 is huge for ANY pumpkin ale. Color me impressed as I would definitely sip ole Shlafly if I were closer to distribution sites. Tonight I sipped some of my first Smuttynose IPA of the year with some lobster. People live like kings and it’s just with their mouths. Love it. Road trip tomorrow to VT so will grab some Heady Topper.
