Deftones Bassist Chi Cheng – Dead at 42

Deftones bassist, Chi Cheng has passed away at age 42. Cheng sustained a serious injury in a 2008 car accident and never made a full recovery. Although he was semi-comatose, he did show promise at times. My deepest condolences go out to the family, friends, and fans of Deftones. I was fortunate enough to see them a handful of times and Cheng was full of energy as he pounded out the back beat for one of metals most passionate bands. His last album, Eros, is still unreleased, but the band does confirm it will see the light of day. Below is a message from Cheng’s mother and once again, Left Hand Horror sends up prayers and vibes during this delicate time.

“Our dearest family,

“This is the hardest thing to write to you.

“Your love and heart and devotion to Chi was unconditional and amazing. I know that you will always remember him as a giant of a man on stage with a heart for every one of you.

“He was taken to the emegency room and at 3 a.m. today his heart just suddenly stopped. He left this world with me singing songs he liked in his ear.

“He fought the good fight.

“You stood by him sending love daily. He knew that he was very loved and never alone.

“I will write more later.
