Stephen King’s “Bag of Bones” Begins on 12/11

Article by FisterRoboto of

“Bag of Bones” is a ghost story of grief and lost love’s enduring bonds, about an innocent child caught in a terrible crossfire and a new love haunted by past secrets. Melissa George, Annabeth Gish, Anika Noni Rose, William Schallert, Jason Priestley and Caitlin Carmichael also star.

In “Bag of Bones,” bestselling novelist Mike Noonan (Brosnan) is unable to stop grieving after the sudden death of his wife Jo (Gish). Suffering from writer’s block, a dream inspires him to return to the couple’s lakeside retreat in western Maine. While there, Mike befriends an attractive young widow, Mattie (George) and her daughter Kyra (Carmichael), and becomes involved in a custody battle with the child’s enormously wealthy grandfather, Max (Schallert). Though his ability to write suddenly returns, Mike is plagued by ever-escalating nightmares and mysterious ghostly visitations from Sara Tidwell (Rose), a blues singer whose spirit lingers in the house. As he is haunted by the many secrets at the lake, Mike comes to realize that his late wife still has something to tell him.”

Bag of Bones is my favorite King novel of the last 15 years. He writes with such style and passion that it eclipsed some of his older classics in my opinion. There is no rule that newer works will never compete with older ones. As a life-long lover of King, and a reader who has devoured everything he’s released, I can honestly say this novel is a masterpiece of horror. It transcends the genre at times. Noonan’s grief is so real that you can feel it. The scene with his wife on the freshly blacktopped parking lot was seared into my imagination and brain.

Movies are rarely as good as the book, and I’m sure this won’t be an exception, but this looks genuinely striking to me. It takes a lot to get this old horror nerd excited anymore – and I’m excited. The two night run time and exceptional cast might hit close to home. I hope it does. I’m cheering for it’s success.

  1. I am so excited about this! I have already set my DVR. To me, movies based off of my fave books rarely do the book any justice, but I am always optimistic! Also can’t wait for your review once it has aired 🙂
