While emptying his late mother’s rural home, Thomas and his wife, Catherine, discover increasingly disturbing secrets until the choice between memory and truth threatens to destroy them both.
I didn’t take much of a chance on this Amazon VOD 7 Day Rental for $1.99. Perfectly written, acted, and directed, Mother’s House is a creepy and effective supernatural thriller that sacrifices horror for a slow, creepy reveal. After the death of his mother, a son (Guinee), returns to his childhood home with his wife (Erbe), in an attempt to clean and organize the empty home. The longer they stay, the more frequent the strange occurrences become.
The film was effective and even lovely at times, utilizing the chemistry of the two leads to drive home the unexpected reveal at the climax. I promise you’ll spend another 30 minutes watching it again as you try to piece all the subtle accents into place. Give it a chance – it’s better than some of the theatrical wastes of time I saw this year.
